Hi! Thanks for stopping by. Here’s my story in a nutshell…
After many years of suffering from anxiety, largely from a poor diet and toxic relationships, I had enough. I was exhausted!
I started by weeding out unsatisfying relationships. Next, I tackled my diet. I use the term “diet” to simply mean what I eat each day, not the other definition that one would use where there are food restrictions tied to losing weight. I find that coming from a place of “deprivation” I’m less focused on making better choices.
The impetus for changing my “diet” was my gut! Both literally and figuratively, I knew that what I was putting into my body was contributing to me feeling anxious and downright lousy! For years, I had been an almost daily Dunkin Donuts drive-through customer, ordering the regular: a Boston Cream donut and a large iced coffee. Then I cut out the donuts and switched to Venti Caramel Machiattos from Starbucks (because that was a better choice—not!). I would indulge in way too much cheese and not nearly enough greens. I’d binge on chocolate cake and not be concerned about protein and fiber.
Gradually I cut out big sugary drinks and started eating a healthy breakfast. I also cut down on the amount and type of sugar I was putting in my body. I began eating more greens and less meat. Drive thru fast-food meals and cola drinks were in the way distant past. I gave those up around the same time I stopped watching the news. Double bonus with less crap to clog my arteries and less negativity to mess with my mind!
I also started exercising. Running, specifically. The combination of better food and getting endorphins flowing had me feeling better and more capable each day. It was a an act of self-care that has helped to me to feel better today than I did in my 20s and 30s! To this day, I limit sugar, which has been replaced by nutritious and delicious options (that I now crave more than I ever craved sugar!) and maintain a daily practice of self-care that includes meditation each morning to get centered, a healthy “diet,” regular exercise and down-time from the hectic world to recharge so I can be my best self.
Although I practice daily self-care, I’m not perfect. Life has its challenges, its ups and down, and there are days that are downright hard. However, because my diet is fairly clean, the days that are challenging, aren’t as hard as they used to be because I can more easily get back on track to healthy eating. And I frequently turn to my accountability coach who helps me stay on track because support is the key to success in achieving any goal.
